WLC300: Pre-seminar, WLC300:Major Pre-Capstone, SPAN 308-90_SP20:Hist/Cultr Aztlan:SW US and WLC400: Major Capstone
Many of the courses completed under this MLO outcome gave effective and sufficient skills to elaborate my Capstone project.
However, there was a process in which different stages were meet to move on forwards with the study. The early stages of becoming aware of the necessities in created a strong research and in the correct approach were accomplished in the WLC courses: Pre-Seminar and Pre-Capstone. Firstly WLC 300, provided activities such as analysis of literature pieces to both Japanese ans Spanish students, with the goal enhancing annotating skills and presenting citation styles. When the course covered briefly the forms of formatting and analyzing resources, we were assigned an activity to look up a specif literature genre and then chose reviews written in their work and give our perspective of their work. Shortly after, we made sure to know how to correctly cite those resources found as support for our perspective. The exploration on learning how to cite correctly, being becoming familiar with the APA or MLA format. In Pre-Capstone, as the citation styles were not only spoken of, but assignments such as to filling in missing details of a citation or identifying the errors, were given. In this course, the focus was also on the Capstone project conducted in WLC 400, as it provided the research skills needed to initiate the project. Among the literature that was examined in Pre-capstone many centered on giving guidance from researchers and experts on citing, all in helping us build up our project and becoming successful writers. The last stage fulfilled in Pre-casptone, solely was on finalizing the topic of our project and becoming experts in citing in APA, as my partner and I declared our investigation to be in linguistics. The format that studies done under linguistics requires APA and to do, so we had to progressively upgrade our MLA citing skills to utilizing all the different forms in APA. Another course that offered research skills and the use of technology tools, was Spanish 308. When using presentation, programs like PowerPoint or others in regard to learn how to navigation different settings to add on special effects or improve the work. The course was online, however, I did presentations where it required mini-research, then to be presented via the program used by the University to update assignments and post publicly for all classmates to follow along as we prerecorded an audio or used notes, serving as the special effects.
The skills developed in citations and mini-research skills were very well-developed, as we had the privilege to begin this exploration in an early stage under other courses. I believe that the articles read, where experts entitle the necessities needed in research helped, as the articles were quite easy to refer back to and understandable, especially for the amateur researchers. The skills that took more time to develop and which have now offered intellectual growth were on finding information from all kinds of resources centered in our projects topic (WLC 400) and utilizing adequate sources. These skills were later improved, as I completed practice activities in formatting in APA, out of class and was always communicating my doubts to my partner or Capstone advisor.
The assignment that were accomplished proved the ability of comprehension in APA style, in different forms. The oral practice in learning how to cite was done in informal presentations, among our classmates and professor. Then formal practice on the level of acknowledgment gained in the citation practices given in various courses, were all put into use in an annotated bibliography. The annotated bibliography is one of the strongest, yet part of the early stages that show my skills in citing, but also features skills in the proper use of resources in such topic and the figuring out how credible they are, as support for our investigation. Another piece of evidence that forms part of the correct use of citations and research in a specif topics was on in an online presentation, completed in Spanish 308. This presentation shows the special effects used and the research done to give enough context to follow along.
